I was 15-years-old and didn’t know a soul. It was my first time being a co-counselor at children’s church camp and I thought it sounded fun, but had no idea what I was in for. I remember walking around with my cabin girls playing in an open field when a girl my age walked over to me and introduced herself, “Hi I am Amy.” We continued with introductions and talked a little; we had an instant connection. You know when you meet someone for the first time and within a few moments have a “I feel like I could be friends with person” hunch? That’s how I felt with Amy. Over that first week at summer camp we formed a friendship that we were both sad to leave. We promised to keep in touch like most people do, the crazy part is….we did. Year after year Amy and I went to the same summer camp to counsel and serve. We bonded not only at camp, but spent hours upon hours throughout the year in between writing, calling, emailing and even visiting each other. I ended up moving to college near her for a year where we were able to spend time in the same town. Even through distance, we have been there for one another through every life situation that young girls go through. The hard times, happy times, and the mundane times. Amy has been such a support, voice of encouragement, and wisdom in my life. When I got engaged (we were in each other’s weddings of course),
pregnant, or any big milestone, Amy has been one of the first people that I call. Our friendship is something so special, life-giving, and meant to be in every respect.
Well, I got a call from Amy last year and was so excited to find out that her and her husband decided to adopt two children from Ethiopia. My heart’s desire is to adopt one day, so I was over the moon excited for her! I couldn’t wait for her to tell me about the process, hear about the ups and downs, and most of all, I couldn’t wait to photograph their new family! I remember one conversation we had as they were waiting on paperwork to process, Amy said “I just want my boys home!” It was so touching to me, as she had never met them, but loved them with a mother’s love. Amy is small petite girl, but her heart is bigger than the ocean. I got the chance to visit them last month and meet their two precious miracles. Though they had only been together for a short time, I couldn’t help but stand in awe of how much love is in their family. Amy’s boys are finally home! I got to experience yet again, another huge life moment with her. I am so honored that I got to meet them and photograph the love of a newly-made family. It still baffles me when I think about how well we have stayed connected throughout the years living apart. There’s nothing like a “once in a lifetime” friend.
