What a special session this was for me. Sarah and her husband Ryan radiate love and beauty. When I was asked to do a newborn session for their beautiful new daughter Evangeline, I knew it was going to be magical. The session was full of peace, light, and most of all love. The love that this couple has for their new little girl oozed out of them the entire session. You could see how captivated they were with her every look she gave and coo she sounded. I was so honored to be able to capture this incredible time in their lives.

“Why compare yourself with others? No one in the entire world can do a better job of being you than you.”

I stumbled upon this quote today, and gave it more consideration than I normally might have. After some thought I concluded with a head nod, and “Hmmm…. that’s good.” So many of us—me included—focus on our weaknesses, what we can’t do, and the people we know who are better at the things we’re bad at. It’s so easy to contrast our weaknesses against other’s strengths, yet wonder why we can feel so negative about ourselves. I believe each of us have God-given gifts, talents, and qualities we were created to express, that only we can express in our unique way. These talents are individual to you.

This applies not only to our personal lives, but also to those in this creative industry. I know how frequently photographers compare themselves and their work to others. I have been guilty of this trap, especially in the inception of my business. Like that first day of college, or first time on a bike, it’s uncertain and you’re just not sure what to expect, or whether you’re going to be any good. But, even after you realize that you do belong, and you are good at your craft, the personal battle doesn’t end. We see this vicious pattern in countless areas of our lives.

The solution, as I see it, is to take a stand to embrace me. Acknowledge where I’m strong, admit where I’m weak or different, and accept that. In business, you can’t be all things to all people—you’ll die trying. In photography, it’s vitally important to make that self-discovery as an artist and fully embrace it. The second you attempt to spread yourself too broad to appease the masses, you’re in trouble. If you continue to play the game of comparing, contrasting, and striving, you’ll always lack the peace and joy that makes this worth doing at all.

I challenge you today my dear friends…. Consider your strengths, what are you good at? On every level. What are your talents, positive personality traits, and differentiators? Call up a trusted friend and ask them if you have to! Next, consider your shortcomings. Where do you miss the mark? It’s never easy, but it feels much better when you confront the dirty laundry in the closet and devise a plan to clean it. Fix what you can, accept what you can’t, and be secure in the uniqueness of who you are.

The greatest fear is, “What if I just agree to be me and nobody likes it?” Trust me, when you’re authentic, others will respond.

No one can do a better job of being you, than you.

I shot this session late last summer and haven’t gotten around blogging it until now. Going through these photos made my heart long for the sun again. Oh sun, how I have missed you! I began to reminisce about summer days and how the light dancing around our town makes my heart burst with warmth, love, and excitement. Iced beverages, long evenings, and bbq’s is what I am dreaming of today. I hope this post puts a little bit of warmth in your heart on this cold winter day.

I have been oh so behind on blogging lately and I hate it. One of my main goals this year was to make sure I stayed up to date on my blog and didn’t just blog sessions, but shared who I am with all of you. Lately, I am lucky if I get half of my sessions blogged. Life has been keeping on my toes. Raising babies, building a house, and being as busy as ever with sessions, there hasn’t been a whole lot of time left in the between. I promise I’ll be a better blogger in the winter when life slows down. For now, I’ll leave you with some delicious sunlight and 3 beautiful children.
