He far exceeded my expectations to say the least. I couldn’t believe how perfect he was and what a great sleeper he turned out to be. I’ve been wanting to a get a baby in this basket since I bought it and haven’t had one yet that would do it. To top off his perfect compliance, Jack only peed one time, that is a new record for me. I think Jack likes me.

I love taking pictures because it captures moments in time that we will never get back. I was looking at pictures the other day of when my first daughter was born. How oh how was she ever that small? It lasted for such a short time that I can hardly remember those early days and its only been 2.5 years! That’s why photographs are so important to me. I love freezing time and leaving people with a memory that will last forever. Little Harper (isn’t that the cutest name??) was my last Etsy model. She is the second girl in her family and her mama is a good friend of mine. I know just how busy it is when you welcome a 2nd child into the family and so I am so glad I got to capture just these small moments for her that she will be able to reflect back on. She will be able to revisit those first days, the peace, the beauty, and the miracle of fresh life.

I remember the moment they placed her on my chest after she was born. As she gazed up at me in silence with her piercing blue eyes I just stared at her in admiration and wonder, looking over and inspecting every little toe and fingernail. You could feel the sense of relief we both had as we finally got to see each other face to face after 9 long months of sharing such a miraculous bond. I knew then that this love was one I hadn’t felt before. It was different that all the other kind of loves that had filled my heart the previous 24 years. This was a love without conditions. I thought to myself “she could be the worlds biggest failure, mess up over and over, break my heart into pieces and yet I will never stop loving her just as I do in this moment.”

My husband was talking to a friend last night about unconditional love. It took me back to this night when my first daughter was born and the realization that both of us had. We both had a new understanding of what unconditional love really meant. The love a parent possesses for a child is miraculous, it’s divine, and has no other comparison except for the way that God loves us. Here is an image of the night my angel was born, the night I came into a new understanding of God’s love:

Also this week I had another Etsy item to display. My friend Joey let me use her beautiful 7 day old baby boy Carter to do be my model. His mommy is radiating with joy and filled to the brim with overwhelming unconditional love.

“Hush little baby don’t say a word, mama’s gonna buy you a mockingbird…” my two year old sang as my 9 month old was screaming her head off in the car. Somehow her consoling was not having the effect she had hoped for. It made little miss tired and hungry scream even louder. I looked at my husband and shrugged “one day it will be quiet again.” Sometimes the constant commotion and chaos of two children under 2 makes me a little crazy and I just can’t wait to get them down for a nap. However, having two little miracles running around my house is something I wouldn’t trade for the world-even if I do have to invest in a pair of hearing aids when I am older.

Many people know newborns are my favorite subjects to photograph…. just looking at pictures of newborns brings me to place of total peace and tranquility. New life is miraculous and awe-inspiring. Little baby Roderick was one of sleepiest, most quiet newborns I have had to date. Although one day he will find his voice (if he already hasn’t) I know his mama wouldn’t trade it for anything.

When I look at this picture it makes all my stresses, fears, and worries leave. How could anyone argue that photography is not art? When I look at this photo emotion is evoked. It takes me somewhere, to another place and time. A place of tranquility, where all is right in the world. It also made me think of one of my favorite verses in Phillipians:

” Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ.”

Now I need to go take a nap.

P.S. More to come from this session later this week. Just had to throw out this sneak peek.
